Apple Self Service Repair: What is it?
The program allows you to repair your own iPhone from home. You can either rent or purchase the proper Apple tools and instructions to be shipped your way. Depending on which iPhone model you have, you will receive specialized tools unique to your device. These are the same genuine parts that are used by Apple’s authorized service providers.
In other words, Apple took their entire repair shop—with over 200 parts and tools—boxed them up, and shipped them to you. These tools come in two different kits, together weighing nearly 80 pounds. In addition, your order includes a repair manual for each iPhone model, with a little less than 100 pages of detailed instructions. Yeah, you’d better sit down. This is required reading before making tool purchases.
There is no small price to pay for these delicate, detailed tools and instructions. If you choose to buy the parts, costs range between $80 and $240 depending on what kind of repair you need. Afterwards you’ll be left with a bunch of specialized tools you may never touch again.
On the other hand, you can rent a kit for $49 instead of buying the tools. However, the rental requires a substantial hold of funds on your credit card in case of damages. This hold was reported to be up to $1300 withheld from your bank account. Not to mention that this kit must be returned within 7 days, meaning you’d better hustle with your aspirations to be a professional iPhone technician.
Is it Worth the Risk?
The Apple Self Service Repair kit gives you everything you need to fix your phone, minus the technician himself. However, Apple gives a strong disclaimer that is repeated throughout the instructions. It says as follows: “Self Service Repair is intended for individuals with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices.” Ironically, Apple then recommends that those who do not have experience with electronic repairs should visit a professional, as this is the safest way to get a repair.
So, does Apple really want you to use their tools, or visit them in person? The timing of Apple’s self repair service is interesting, considering that environmental activists were complaining, saying that Apple causes more harm than good with products that require so much repair.
Shortly after all the fuss, Apple’s Self Service Repair program launched. However in most cases, the price to get your iPhone professionally repaired is actually less than the cost to rent or purchase the tools. Not only that, but it takes way more time to repair something like that on your own, especially if you have no experience.
Several people, including a New York Times reporter, have tried the kit and have actually incurred more damage to their phones in the process. According to the reporter who broke his phone in the process, the worst part is having to call Apple and confirm that you’ve only used Apple parts to complete the repair. If you have used other pieces during the repair process, they will not allow you to complete the repair process.
